A Special Moment In Time - Martin Luther King in Newcastle upon Tyne

On November 13, 2017, NewcastleGateshead will come together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr King's acceptance of an honorary degree at Newcastle University – the only time he was honoured by a British University in his lifetime. It was the last time Dr King addressed an international audience. His speech, where Dr King outlined the three evils of war, poverty and racism, was filmed and has recently come to light.

Freedom City 2017 will draw on the themes of war, poverty and racism highlighted by Dr King, which remain as relevant today as they were in 1967.

To mark this important anniversary Newcastle Gateshead will become host to Freedom City 2017, a two year programme of arts, culture and debate that will alter the cultural landscape of the North East using this unique event as a catalyst for change.

Patrick has the honour, with his brother Adam, of being Creative Director of the celebrations with Amanda Drago producing.

The website for Freedom City is www.freedomcity2017.com

Wor Drama

Joe Maddison’s War, the feature length directorial drama debut of Patrick Collerton was screened on September 19th at 9pm. A World War Two drama starring Kevin Whately, Robson Green, Derek Jacobi and Melanie Hill, it was the last screenplay by the late, great, Alan Plater (Z Cars, Beiderbecke Affair, A Very British Coup). Produced by Howard Ella, it was a Mammoth Screen Production.

It gained an astonishing 6.2m viewers and was warmly received by the critics. This is what they said;

“This was a perfect and perfectly simple drama of a shipyard worker on Tyneside whose wife leaves him for a naval officer.” Financial Times

“It certainly had the best of Plater in it, from his dry humane wit to his willingness to take a swerve into deep emotion.” The Independent

“A poignant and witty tale of self discovery.” The Daily Telegraph

“Decency in drama is dead. Alan Plater snuck in with Joe Maddison’s War just as the curtains closed and life became dark.” Radio Times
